Ride With Chloe to fight The Black Dog
Join us on our mission to raise awareness of depression and suicide prevention
Hi, our names are Ken and Chloe Eaton and we are looking forward to our Black Dog Ride experience with the Around Australia Ride 2019 team and help raise funds for this great cause as we ride over 15,500 kms over 33 days . Although only our first Black Dog, we are fairly experienced in long distance riding, having travelled over 200,000 km’s in the past ten years by motorbike, visiting every capital city in Australia plus much of the outback, including Birdsville and Oodnadatta.
My motorbike travels started after losing my wife, and Chloe’s mum, to younger onset dementia twelve years ago after a downward spiral that lasted six years. A time that started with the positive outlook that I could handle to one of despair of placing a person you love into a hospital to prepare for a life in a nursing home, and seeing that person’s life fade away within three months.
My support during that time was a wonderful friend that had lost her husband, and my good friend, to suicide a few years earlier and to be able to talk and share our dark moments together as we managed to get through those lonely periods. Why my friend Alan could not share his darkness remains a mystery to us.
After my wife Sue passed away, my daughters gave me an option of either buying a motorbike, a lifelong passion of mine, or getting a girlfriend, I brought a motorbike. I would miss Sue’s little companion dog, Chloe, each time I would ride so quickly developed a little travel pod for her and we have travelled the roads together ever since.
Motorbike riding is a wonderful place to reflect, and along with involvement with the fantastic group of the Ulysses Motorbike Club, I have happily survived a dark period of my life. My reflections led me to establish a small charity called ‘I Ride With Chloe To Fight Dementia’ to raise awareness to the battle carers go through as their love ones forget the things and those around them.
Friends of mine recently lost their son, Leon, to depression and I see the daily pain in their faces so Chloe and I are dedicating this ride to our old friend Alan and our friend’s son, Leon.
I am excited to hopefully be able to share to others my experiences as suffer and survivor of one of the many forms that depression can take, and help this great charity, the Black Dog Ride, so please come and Ride With Chloe To Fight The Black Dog.
